The City of Stonnington is working with local businesses to make Stonnington’s unique retail areas more vibrant and build long-term sustainability and resilience.

Council developed the Vacant to Vibrant action plan because we recognise that our diverse and vibrant shopping precincts and strips are integral to our identity and liveability.

The action plan contains 15 initiatives that have been developed in consultation with businesses, landlords, real estate agents, retails experts and business associations.

The initiatives are designed to either attract new tenants to Stonnington’s retail precincts, retain existing tenants by helping them remain commercially successful, or activate vacant tenancies and spaces to improve the experience of shoppers.

Focusing on these three objectives is expected to address immediate challenges while also supporting greater long-term sustainability and building resilience.

A timeline has been developed for delivering the initiatives and the first to get underway is the development of precinct profiles to help prospective businesses determine where the best location is in Stonnington for them to set up shop.

The profiles will contain detailed local knowledge of how places are changing, useful insights that identify market gaps and trends to better support new tenants and assist in their choice of location for their business.

The plan also highlights the positive impact placemaking efforts can have on a shopper’s experience. Placemaking interventions are things like lighting upgrades, street furniture, murals and public artwork.
As a result we are also going to be further improving the character and identity of our retail precincts to encourage people more people to visit and linger longer.
